Taking the world by storm just like Fall Guys, Among Us shows the gaming industry on how simple yet brilliant concepts can be made into incredibly successful titles.
Among Us is a sci-fi murder mystery game developed and published by Innersloth on June 15, 2018 for IOS and Android and on August 18, 2018 on PC at Steam. The game is free on Android but the PC version costs around $2.99 on Steam.
The game was a late bloomer on Steam and had a small yet steadily growing fanbase. However, the game experienced its biggest surge in playercount on August 2020 when the game hit 1.5 million players as per the official company stats. With popular streamers like Shroud, 39daph and other popular streamers playing the game, the number is expected to grow even higher in the coming months.
Now the question remains how is the actual game?
Among Us is a game that suits best with friends. The rules of the game are simple: There are 10 players in total and among them 1-3 players (depending on the options selected) are imposters and the rest are crewmates. The crewmates are given various tasks to complete around the map while the imposters job is to kill the crewmates in secrecy. The imposters are hidden among the crewmates so players don’t know who the imposters are, thus leading to a sense of tension.
Now here comes the fun part: The players can call a meeting and vote off the player they think is an imposter. This turns the game from a tension filled guessing game to a game that brings out all the distrust and betrayal friends can possess. The game is the perfect concoction of a friendship and trust breaker among friends. Even the slightest of suspicion can cause your entire group of friends to kick you out even if you aren’t an imposter.
The win conditions of the crewmates are simple. If they can successfully find out the imposters and vote them out, they win. If they can complete their tasks even after dying, they will win. Winning as a crewmate is easy enough with some level of coordination, however that may be a bit difficult when you’re playing with randoms.
Now let’s talk about the “High risk, High satisfaction” part of the game. I’m talking about the Imposter. The Imposter is a risky but also a rewarding gameplay experience. You can sabotage different part of the ships like cutting off lights etc. and can kill the other crewmates. The kill ability has a cooldown timer; something an imposter should keep in mind.
In addition to these, the imposter can also hide in vents lying in wait for their prey. However, since only imposters can enter vents, entering a vent at the wrong time may seal your fate. The Imposter playstyle is immensely fun yet risky as well. One mistake and you’re done but succeed in your plans and you easily terrify the crewmates without them even knowing who you are. A good Imposter can easily manipulate the whole room and can kill them one by one.
The Win condition of the Imposter is fun too. Kill all the crewmates and you win.
Graphics and Customization:
The graphics of the game have a weird aesthetic that make it a mix of cheesy alien sci-fi movies in the 90s and cartoons from back in the day.All of the 3 playable maps have very different type of artistic approaches and so they feel very alive with the rich use of design and architecture.
The playable characters are all bean like monsters which are quite adorable. The addition of different cosmetic options also allows the players to create their own cute alien bean. They can be easily unlocked via playing the game or by purchasing the DLC.
The game was built on the Unity game engine and so has very good optimization and quite lenient graphical options. All of the 3 maps are distinct and very unique giving players something new to learn at each step. The developers are also very active in treating their newfound playerbase well and are already gearing to release new maps and other features.
The servers of the game are also in good condition with only a minor server lags here and there. The controls themselves are solid and the option to choose between keyboard and mouse+keyboard is a very nice addition indeed. The game is also very small in terms of size so it can easily fit in one small corner of your HDD and never need to be replaced.
As someone who doesn’t enjoy online party games that much, Among Us simply surprised me. I didn’t expect myself to enjoy the game as much as I did. Hours went by with friends and we still wanted to play another game. Its simplistic yet enjoyable gameplay loop let me and my friends just chill and have a fun time accusing each other. Among Us is simply the game for cracking open a cold one with the boys and in this age of hyper-aggressive e-sport games, is simply a must have for anyone just looking to have fun. It deserves a solid 9/10 from me and I can’t wait to see what the game has in store for us in the future.
