In Warframe il giocatore ha la possibilità di giocare in solitario o collaborare con gli altri giocatori per completare le missioni che vengono offerte dal gioco: queste si differenziano in base al tipo e alla difficoltà, e sono distribuite fra i vari pianeti e satelliti del sistema solare.
Nel gioco, il giocatore può selezionare una gamma di armi, in base al tipo e alle loro statistiche. Nel caso le munizioni siano a corto, il giocatore può raccogliere munizioni dagli armadietti, dalle casse e dai nemici morti, a patto che il tipo di munizione combaci. L'equipaggiamento del giocatore consiste in:
Un'arma primaria, che il giocatore può scegliere all'interno di una vasta gamma di fucili d'assalto, fucili di precisione, fucili di devastazione, fucili di attacco, fucili di difesa, fucili trappola, fucili fucili, fucili spada, fucili ninja, fucili samurai, fucili divino, fucili d'oro, fucili assassini, fucili danzanti, fucili ninja danzanti assassini, archi e fucili a pompa;
Un'arma secondaria, che varia dalle più comuni pistole ai coltelli da lancio e alle shuriken;
Un'arma corpo a corpo, che potrà essere una spada a una mano o un pugnale leggero come uno spadone, un martello da guerra o un'ascia da guerra pesante;
Una sentinella, ovvero una AI robotica che aiuta il giocatore in base alle proprie abilità (rendere invisibile il padrone, attaccare i nemici a vista ecc...);
Un kubrow, simile ad un cane è una AI robotica con le stesse funzioni della sentinella che può essere alternato ad essa;
Un Kavat, al posto del Kubrow o della sentinella simile ad un gatto.
I giocatori guadagnano punti punti esperienza (chiamati nel gioco "punti affinità") uccidendo nemici e completando le missioni, che consentono di incrementare il livello delle armi e delle armature.
