This list includes my picks for top RTS, Real Time Strategy (mainly base building) games:
The games listed are based on ease of play/understanding, their influence, features, the fun I had, etc.
The games listed are certainly not the new(after 2013) as my potato wasn't able to run them.
5. Supreme Commander
Unlimited resources, huge scale battles, cool graphics, pretty cool zooming feature, balanced.
Overall, it's a pretty great series. Then why is it on number 5?
Because there is a variety of units and 4 factions. It took time to get into (still not very into it) but is certainly one of the best.
4. Command & Conquer
There are new games in the series but I liked the ones before Kane's Wrath. It's very easy to get into, ie. you can play with friends who don't play RTS but after a while, it can get boring.
3. Warcraft III
I got late into WarCraft 3 (started the campaign this year only) but have played many other game modes (DoTA, Racing, Tower Defense, Legion, Anime fights, etc). since long before.
Easy to get into, many units but the factions have similar kinds of units, so it's not that difficult. Hero units are also a good feature but do make the game a tad difficult.
I am yet to play WarCraft and Warcraft 2.
2. Age Of Empires
Great Series with large skill trees and variety of units. Slightly bad unit AI (like StarCraft). Can be a little difficult if you don't know the basics.
Fun with friends, but requires practice for getting good.
1. StarCraft
3 Races - humans, arthropods and sci-fi aliens, 2 resources, well-balanced factions, a variety of units for each race. Humans have the nuke, Insects have an early rush, Aliens have regen. I don't know what makes this game great, but it is fun and that's all that matters.
Tried Starcraft 1, but limited selection of units and bad AI stopped me from playing it.
The arcade mode which offers many game modes is also a reason for it to be no. 1. Blizzard sure knows how to make games.
Games I want to try - Planetary Annihilation, Ashes of the singularity, Grey Goo, Cossacks 3
this is a great article guy :)
