    Review: Megaton Rainfall

Most often, games about superheroes are action games with a third-person view, where we control familiar characters from comics. But for some reason, until now, almost no one came to mind to create a project where we in the role of the all-powerful superman would fly above the Earth and execute justice, watching what is happening from the eyes of the protagonist. Spaniard Alfonso del Cerro (Alfonso del Cerro) took the initiative in his own hands and for five years worked on such a game. And it turned out to be a unique, albeit not ideal, thing.

Just provide a huge playground for entertainment, he did not - in Megaton Rainfall, even there is a semblance of a storyline. With the nameless and silent (in order to be easier to associate with) the hero communicates with the higher mind, who asks him to save the planet from the invaders and return the stolen xenospheres. Scoundrels are all kinds of aliens, destroying all life in its path. And the higher mind has not only a pleasant voice, but also a generous soul - he constantly throws additional possibilities to the character.

At first, the superhero has almost no skills - he can only release energy shells from his hand. Also, it is able to descend to the ground and, conversely, to rise upward, leaving the atmosphere and hovering in space over continents and oceans. But with each new xenosphere, its arsenal replenishes with more and more useful skills: first it is a gigaton explosion, which, with careless use, demolishes the whole city, then telekinesis, acceleration, laser and much more.

With great strength, as is known, great responsibility comes, and therefore it is necessary to use the skills carefully. It is worth to miss and get into the skyscraper instead of the enemy, as it collapses, and the damage caused to the city will be displayed on the scale in the lower left corner. The game does not punish much for such missteps - the points of conservation are very generously placed, and the damage is not so significant that due to a couple of incorrect movements it was necessary to start the mission anew. And, if the scale dries up, when the last checkpoint is loaded, it again becomes full, which simplifies the task.

A shooter in the milk beginner superhero will often, since the vast majority of enemies have only one weak spot, painted in red. The variety of opponents is due to what from Megaton Rainfallit's hard to tear myself away. There are flying aliens of different shapes, there are very fast "pieces of iron" that scorch houses with lasers. Then there are whole spaceships, and out of them come out either long teeth covered with teeth, or flat monsters coalescing with the walls. And this is not all types of enemies - it's better to learn about the most unusual ones yourself.
Come opponents waves, so with rare exceptions, there are no situations when the whole city is under threat, and the hero needs to fly from corner to corner and not lose a second. But with each new mission of difficulties arises more and more, including because of the appearance of the character's new abilities. For example, when he learns telekinesis, enemies begin to fly from space, dropping from time to time bombs with timers. Small shells must be thrown to the enemies, because otherwise they can not be defeated, but large bombs must be thrown into the sky as soon as possible. If you hesitate and do not react in time, the explosion will be so strong that there will be no chance of saving the city and will have to return to the "checkpoint".

Around the world in 80 seconds

It looks great on the screen, although the graphics in Megaton Rainfall are far from the most modern. But when a huge worm drills its way through the walls of skyscrapers; When high-rise buildings are destroyed and turn into ruins; When a laser divides a huge building in half, and then the chain is affected by the residents of neighboring houses - that's really breathtaking. Plus, all this is accompanied by car sirens and screams from the townspeople, and you try to defeat all the newcomers as soon as possible, without aggravating the situation with your own hands.

Unfortunately, if you come closer to the ground, flaws begin to appear in your eyes: angular holes from the Boers are visible, then people run with square heads and very poor animation. But if you take into account the scale and stable 60 frames / s, you can still forgive such shortcomings. And not so often (or more precisely, almost never) it is necessary to land - most often you soar in the sky, trying to find vulnerable points in the aliens (from enemies of the same type they can be in different places) and admiring destruction.

As the superhero travels, he will visit the most diverse corners of the planet, but it is not worth hoping to recreate the famous cities - these are routinely generated levels that have nothing to do with real life. Although some of the sights can still be seen - a couple of times I flew over an archipelago very similar to the Palm Islands in the UAE, and the famous Big Ben. In the rest it's just filled with houses, streets, cars and people of the city. Perhaps, if del Cerro worked not alone, he would be able to recreate at least the largest capitals, but hardly anyone would appreciate it.

However, even now flights over the Earth bring great pleasure. Here you rush at great speed through the city, trying not to crash into buildings. Clamp R1 and rise higher, and the city already seems a small spot, and even higher - and at all a small point. For a couple of seconds you find yourself on the other side of the planet and land on the spot, which is approaching epic music, reminiscent of popular films based on comics. But outside the Earth there are other planets to which you can fly!

And even after the passage, which will take about four hours (depending on how much time you spend on flightless flights), periodically you want to return to Megaton Rainfalland again to push on schm aliens. Do not seek to win the maximum rating in each mission, and still once feel complete freedom of action and take part in protecting the city. To try the version for PlayStation VR, unfortunately, failed, but the owners of the helmet already call the project one of the best releases for this platform, and for sure it is really so - this idea is ideal for virtual reality.

However, without a helmet Megaton Rainfall brings a lot of positive emotions. Manage the hero easily, with the camera turning there are no problems, and the constant acquisition of new skills and various opponents make the passage boring. And the opportunity to leave the atmosphere and in a matter of seconds to be in a completely different place seems impressive even after a few hours. Graphically, the game is far from ideal, which is especially noticeable outside of cities and when the camera approaches the streets. But when you throw shells and burn a laser approaching skyscrapers ships, think about textures and polygons want the last.

Pros:the opportunity to feel like a superhero with almost limitless possibilities; diverse and original opponents; good musical accompaniment; colorful destruction of buildings.

Cons: imperfect graphics sometimes strikes the eye; cities lack individuality.
