Modern Combat Versus, first impressions: the best alternative to Overwatch in Android

Gameloft is one of the most successful gaming companies in Android. After several months in beta, these days comes Modern Combat Versus. This is the evolution of the classic Modern Combat 5, but unlike this one we are looking at a shooter of shots, but multiplayer. A game style that many of us will associate with Overwatch, the Blizzard game for PC.

In Modern Combat Versus we will be able to choose an agent and fight against the rest of the enemies in a multiplayer team battle where we will have to defend zones, use the special skills of each agent and fine-tune our precision to upgrade.

Beyond Shadowgun Deadzone, there are no great games with good graphics in Android that bet on such a style. The eSports are becoming more and more popular, but at the moment the strategic game style of Clash Royale prevails in mobile phones, rather than more classic shooters like the one we have today.

A multiplayer shooter for Android with high quality graphics

Modern Combat Versus is one of the most complete games that can be downloaded today through Google Play. We must have 1.77GB free space on our device and I also recommend a very good smartphone. That said, the graphics of the new Modern Combat match its name. In all these years the Gameloft saga has always been synonymous with good graphics and in this case is no exception. Today it's hard to tell the difference between mobile games and games that aren't next-generation consoles.

Modern Combat Versus is one of the Android games with the most demanding graphics.

The game offers us multiplayer 4-4 battles and we will fight to control a central zone. They are third person shots although we can aim with different weapons to gain precision. The controls are tactile and work quite well and when shooting in a couple of minutes we'll get used to it.

    Singleplayer or multiplayer

At the beginning we have a small tutorial based on four offline games where we will practice against weaker enemies. Once completed it gives us access to the full player mode or the Bronze League multiplayer, the real battlefield of the game and where we will face the rest of users.

As usual in multiplayer shooter, the key to its success will be in the competitive world.

This is where the competitive mode starts. Our agents will gain experience, we will go up in level, unlocking new skills and weapons. In the teams we will be able to select three different agents, each one with its specific role. From more offensive agents, some faster and others more defensive.

The roles of each agent are very well defined and we have 12 different characters that we can unlock as we gain experience or Versus coins. The gateway to micro-payments.
As we play on the five different maps, we'll save our game in Google Play Games and upgrade.
From inferior to superior we have: Bronze League, silver, gold, platinum, emerald and diamond. The players we face will be better, but the box rewards after each game will also increase.

Different roles for each agent, but few game modes

We miss more game modes. It is mainly a flag catch but with only one area. It is also true that Modern Combat Versus has just come out and we have no doubt that if it succeeds in the next expansions will increase the combat style.

The ambience and work at the design level has been very successful. It's not just about graphics, it's also about Korp Team vs Octo Team agents. They are all very mechanical and with masks, but the various agents have their unique voice, movements and abilities completely disparate such as camouflage, shield, augmented reality, poison or grenades.

Each of the 12 agents has their role in the game. On the contrary, we have no differentiated battle modes.

The game has been updated only a few days after its deployment in Android because it contained multiple bugs. In our test we have to say that we have also had some crashes, although it has stabilized and we have been able to move forward.

An excellent shooter, but Gameloft style

In the end, my first impression can be summed up in the same way as with Gameloft games. It's a stunning work on graphics and gameplay and it's an excellent new version of a classic like Modern Combat, yet the amount of in-game shopping and coins take casual gamblers backwards. Some users will eventually choose to pay for new agents.

No one wants to pay or wait to get ahead, but Gameloft is an expert at making games like that.

We also have time counters and until a few hours or even days pass, we cannot collect the various rewards. The game is very entertaining, but these ways of encouraging the purchase of objects hinder us from enjoying it.The game level balance is also affected by the character unlocking system. Despite being in the same league if other players decide to pay for unlocking more powerful characters, we will be at a disadvantage.

Nevertheless, I recommend that anyone who wants to test their mobile phone download Modern Combat Versus, a free multiplayer shooter with stunning graphics, a very good gameplay but with a monetization system that takes it away from the real competitive world that can be enjoyed in Overwatch.
