Wait what... the game if free, the champions are free. You can buy skins, wards, icons, etc "to support" Riot. You also can get these for free. Just got my reward from gamehag, 1580 RP on EUW.

I don't see how League is pay to play.
Like orsika19 said, everything is free/can be acquired via in-game currency except for cosmetics.
The only thing that comes to mind that "helps you advance" in game is just xp boosts. And since the lvl rework it isn't that relevant anymore
