The Devil May Cry series was launched in 2001, when the already popular Capcom studio created the first part of the series for the PlayStation 2 console.
Devil May Cry almost immediately gained immense popularity thanks to its remarkable mechanics, engaging story, interesting characters and graphics. The unique fighting style was appreciated by the players. Each of the fights in DMC is rated on a scale, ranging from "Dull", through "Cool", "Bravo", "Absolute", to the perfect punching called "Stylish".
The first DMC was a game combining elements of hack'n'slash and platformers. The game was divided into stages, called missions, during which Dante - the main character of the series had to fight enemies straight from hell, move on platforms and solve puzzles. The plot of the first part focuses on the fate of Dante and Trish, who must defeat the Lord of Hell - Mundus.
Devil May Cry soon after its premiere received very high ratings among players, critics and gaming magazines. The game has sold over four million copies. It is fair to say that it was the success of the first part of the series that pushed the creators to create the sequel - Devil May Cry 2 - in 2003 and the prequel Devil May Cry 3, which was released in 2005.
The game also has a few more parts, but the first three have become iconic. It was them who got a renewed, remastered re-edition, which was released for PlayStation3 and Xbox 360 in 2012 and for PS4, XONE and PC in 2018.
