I'm not collecting anything special,. but their quiet handy if i want to do a giveaway for friends then i can nearly always get a decent reward to give away.

or wait till something interesting comes up, which would be worth for me to spend the gems on.

In my case, the Steam gift cards are just about always what I'm aiming for. Though there are some game keys I've gotten via Gamehag as well. Strangely enough, I've noticed that a game key can actually cost less SG on Gamehag than it would cost to purchase enough Steam gift cards to purchase said game on Steam.

Where's the logic in that?

I personally collect for Steam gift cards as well, and as to answer the question, I believe certain games partner with GameHag in order to increase brand awareness so they will sell the game for less.
