A look at a light-hearted sci-fi/fantasy romp through a voxel-based world.
Trove is a free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing game where Players assume the role of one of multiple classes, each with their own strengths, weaknesses, play styles and abilities. These include the Dino Tamer, the Chloromancer, the Revenant, Lunar Lancer, Tomb Raiser, Boomeranger, Pirate Captain, Shadow Hunter, Ice Sage, Candy Barbarian, the Vanguardian, Neon Ninja, Dracolyte, Fae Trickster, Gunslinger, and the Knight. Unlike traditional mmorpgs, Trove is action oriented and allows for free movement, akin to the "Legend of Zelda" series.
Players start in a central area called the 'Hub' where they can access portals that lead to different worlds within the game. As players gain levels - and 'loot', such as weapons and armor - by slaying monsters and completing quests, they can unlock more challenging worlds along with new skills and abilities. Within each world are multiple biomes of various themes, such as Neon City, Highlands, The Fae Forest, Dragonfire Peaks, Candoria, Treasure Isles, and more.
One of Trove's many fun and interesting features is the ability for players to build their own homes called "cornerstones". Each World has designated areas where players can construct and relocate their creations. They provide shelter from roaming creatures, as well has healing and access to item storage and crafting tables. Players can also get creative with a variety of blocks and decor that they can collect along the way, and build anything from humble little cabins to massive towers.
Another feature is that players can form groups called "clubs" and have exclusive access to their own unique worlds. These worlds are free from hostile creatures and unlike other worlds where building is limited to a cornerstone plot, club members are free to build anywhere within the world and even shape the world itself. Players can access these clubs via portals within the hub or their own cornerstone (if they've crafted and placed a portal there.)
The game is action packed and fast placed, running and dodging enemy attacks while delivering their own. When players enter a world, they move from one biome to the next, invading and clearing the many dungeons scattered across the map. Each dungeon has a "boss" creature that, once defeated, leaves behind a chest full of treasure and other rewards for the player. Besides weapons and armor, players can also obtain mounts that increase travel speed, as well as small ships that allow easy sailing across lakes and oceans.
Trove is a fun game that can provide plenty of challenge and entertainment, especially when played with friends, along with allowing players to be creative by building their own 'cornerstones'. However, some players may find Trove to be a bit on the repetitious and "grindy" side after playing a lengthy session. Overall, I recommend giving this one a try.
