Golden Axe is a side-scrolling arcade video game published and developed by Sega. It focuses on the adventures of three main characters who set off to fight evil creatures and in search of the legendary Golden Axe, the magical emblem of Yuria.
Story
The game took place in the magical world of medieval fantasy where an evil entity, Death Adder, appeared from the darkness and captured the King and his daughter. He tricked the people and took the magical emblem named Golden Axe and threatened to end the monarchy. He demanded the people to accept him as their new ruler. Meanwhile, three warriors which include Gilius Thunderhead, a dwarf who was capable of axe-wielding, Ax Battler, a barbarian who was capable of wielding double-swords, and Tyris Flare, an amazon who was capable of handling the long sword, set out on a journey to save the kingdom and its inhabitants.
Afterward, warriors rescued the people of a village located on the shell of a giant turtle. The turtle took the warriors across the sea. The warriors passed by the Fiend’s Path and found a giant eagle and took a ride on its back to the castle. On their way, they saw the heap of corpses lying in the village that reminded them of their dead friend, Alex. Later, they faced Death Adder in the castle’s dungeon.
Gameplay
As the game progresses, the player encounters demons, knights, mace men, skeletons, and other Death Adder’s troops. The player can choose to play as one protagonist at a time. The storyline is different for all characters. The game features mechanics like casting spells, riding the mutants, knocking off the enemy, jumping and, attacking with equipped weapons. The spells are powerful and can hurt all types of enemies, but they require magic potions attained by kicking the little sprites. The spells also has different levels which, causes damage accordingly. All the characters have different magic spells like Ax can shake the earth and cause the earth quake, Gilius can cast lightning spells which result in the thunderstorm, and Tyris can use fire spells and throw fireballs.
Ending
Despite having the Golden Axe, Death Adder faced defeat brutally and, peace returned to the land. The warriors freed the royal family and perished the evil forces. After completing the game, the player received Golden Axe which granted the player immortality. We can estimate the success of the game by the times; it was ported to different platforms like PC, Genesis, Master System, Commodore 64, WonderSwan, and ZX Spectrum. The PC version had an extra character which, appeared in the last battle as a final boss, Death Bringer. In addition to the campaign, some versions also feature duel and survival modes. The game also features the co-op mode that allows two players to complete the story together.
