Usage of the BR tag is probably a bug and hardly a feature
It works since when posting new threads, the OP post will lose all linebreaks so you can fix that with BR tags
HTML in posts is turned off, and there is also no BBcodes (that i know of) allowed (sadly)
In second and further comments it's not needed to use the tag, just press enter when you want to linebreak
