You just send them the link that's on your soul gems page, and if they sing up using that link, they'll be on your friend list.
When you invite friends they have to sign up and actually earn a certain amount of soul gems. After they reach that amount you will get the reward. For each invited person, who will earn 1000SG on his own you will receive 200SG.
