Hello and welcome!
Today's review is going to be on Doom 3 BFG Edition, which contains Doom 1 ˛& 2, an enhanced version of Doom 3 and its addon, Resurrection of Evil.. If you're confused, Doom was released in 1993, the Doom you probably know better today is considered a reboot, but of course they were too lazy to properly change the name.
Story
Here's a thing Doom is notorious for: Not having a lot of story. You're basically a marine, arrive on Mars and a teleporter fails, as hell storms through it with demons.
Gameplay mechanics
It is very different from its first two games, as it is true 3D, there's jumping, crouching, reloading and even PDAs with small stories.
Since Doom 3 BFG Edition is a lot darker than the original games, and is designed like a horror shooter instead of a massacre demons shooter, it has a flashlight. Originally it had the flashlight as separate "weapon", but the BFG Edition has an attached flashlight, which runs out of juice pretty fast and has to charge.
Next of we have the Personal Data Assistants. You mostly find them near dead bodies and some contain passwords for things like lockers with ammo and weapons. They also have bits of story. The most common thing you can get from them is text, but there are also audio and video recordings.
In this image you can see some of the weapons; The chainsaw, pistol, shotgun, machine gun and plasma rifle. There are more weapons, like the iconic Super Shotgun and BFG 9000 too.
This is the Soul Cube, it is an ancient Martian artifact, and the most powerful weapon in the game. It deals 1000 damage and can be shot once after getting 5 kills.
This is the Heart of Hell, also known as Bloodstone. It appears in Resurrection of Evil is the equivelant of the Soul Cube
from the main game. It can be used once if it absorbs the soul from a human corpse. The player briefly moves faster during the effect, does more berserk damage and becomes invincible.
This weapon appears in The Lost Mission and Resurrection of Evil. It is the Ionized Plasma Levitator, or better known as Grabber. It's basically the gravity gun from Half-Life 2. You can grab enemy projectiles and some objects, move them around and throw them.
Soundtrack
It is pretty atmospheric instead of adrenaline inducing. The main menu theme is like a trap for players who expected a Quake-like Doom experience.
Visuals
Spooky. A lot more blood and the enemies are 3D. Maybe the game doesn't look that great today, but it was a pretty big thing. Besides... If you really want this game to look great... There's Sikkmod, it makes the game look extremely good.
Monsters
Some were scrapped, some were redesigned and some were new. Hell Knigts for instance don't look anything like the used to. Here's a link to a website with all monsters in detail: http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Doom_3_monsters
Doom 3 VS Doom 3 BFG Edition
Fortunately, I have found a nice image that compares the two. It saved me a lot of time, and you'll be able to see the differences way easier too.
