W League of Legends gra się tylko w sieci i tylko z innymi ludźmi. Oczywiście można włączyć grę z botami, ale szczerze to odradzam, chyba tylko by otrzaskać się z podstawami sterowania. Gracze dzielą się na dwa zespoły, z których każdy ma bazę w jednym z rogów mapy. Pomiędzy bazami przebiegają trzy ścieżki, nazywane lane'ami. Po lane'ach zasuwają sterowani przez komputer żołnierze nazywani minionami albo creepami. Nie mamy na nich żadnego wpływu, ale ich rola jest bardzo ważna - tworzą linie frontu, na których potem walczą bohaterowie, no i co najważniejsze, są źródłem pieniędzy i doświadczenia.
