Just an idea for a UK commander who is still alive. The Duke of Edinburgh, granted he only commanded one ship post war but if you read the list of battles he partook in kinda makes you wish you could grab a pint and just let him talk. Forget any "Royal" stories tell me what it was like serving on DD'S or on HMS Valiant.
