My review of The Cycle

 “The Cycle” is a quest shooter released by Yager development on August 5th, 2019. It combines the elements of a Battle Royale game with those of a loot shooter such as Destiny or Borderlands, and is free on the Epic Games store, to boot! After almost 20 hours of playtime, here's my review, broken into sections and an overall opinion at the bottom:

Gameplay: 
The game has good movement mechanics and average gunplay, but where it really shines is the quest shooter aspect. While you can play it like a normal battle royale and rack up some kills, you need to finish quests and kill monsters to gain points and get new guns. There are three factions you can work for, each have their own special powers and guns to choose from. There are many various types of weapons and abilities to use, and you won't find yourself getting bored of the choices anytime soon. The dev team has made some recent changes to discourage simply fighting other teams for no reason, so you might want to play passively and rack up some points. The end of the round is where these will matter, because when all the teams are eliminated or have evacuated the planet on the rescue ship, your teams points are what determines the winner.

Graphics:
Overall, the graphics are quite satisfying. The alien planet is rendered in a stylized fashion, keeping your framerate high while making the game still look good. For a medium to high end gaming rig you should have no problems running this at Ultra, while on lesser systems you can reduce some graphics settings and still be fine. My only complaints about the graphics would be that sometimes objects in the distance look a bit fuzzy, like the antialiasing is working a little too hard. Overall though, the graphics look great and are complimented well by the gameplay.

Sound Design:
I haven't noticed anything in particular to stand out to me about the sound design, but there's really no negatives to it either. For this style of game, I wouldn't consider this category to be very important anyways.

Singleplayer/story:
The Cycle devs have added a single player campaign mode where you can complete missions and learn more about the lore behind The Cycle. If you'd rather just play the PvP arena mode against other players, you aren't going to miss out on any special weapon unlocks, just story content.

Overall Opinion: 
While it has a few small flaws and issues, The Cycle is a great game you should try if you get the chance. The devs are still constantly working on improving the gameplay experience and the game is free, so you're not going to waste money if you don't like it.
